Saturday evening Patrice came home with a bundle of mail in her hand and began sorting through it, hers and mine.

A few weeks before, she and I had planned a short trip to Inglis, Florida to visit mutual friends for a much needed weekend with good food, good drinks, and great conversation but I was not able to go due to a painful hip problem (waiting on surgery). So Patrice and Carolyn went together. I stayed home in bed and tried to get bed rest in hope that the pain would subside.

When Patrice returned she mentioned that Gary Burghoff from the cast of MASH was living in Inglis and had agreed to be available for photos and autographs on Saturday. She went on to say that she was unable to see him or get his autograph.

I watch the old reruns of MASH on late night TV several times a week with Patrice and we always have the same conversation that goes something like this:

Patrice, “I never liked that show when it was on it’s first run.”
Richard, “I know but I like it and I think it is still funny.”
Patrice, “Why don’t you turn it over to the news?”
Richard, “Because it makes me laugh.”
(a few minutes pass)
Patrice is laughing at the show…
Richard, “I thought you said it wasn’t funny?”
Patrice is silent except for periodic laughter…

Back to the mail. Patrice handed me an envelope, it looked like a card of some type, that was addressed to me in a familiar handwriting. I thought it looked like Patrice’s handwriting or her mother’s, Mary, or maybe even my own moms but I wasn’t certain.

It was a get well card. Here is the front:

What a nice surprise when I opened the card to see who it was from and discovered that Gary Burghoff (Radar) from MASH had sent me a get well card!

Then Patrice confessed that she had left the card with someone in line to see Gary and written a note asking him to please sign the card for her boyfriend who watched all the MASH reruns and wasn’t able to come today and see him himself.

That really made my day and I want to say how lucky I am to have such a wonderful, thoughtful and loving woman by my side! Thank you baby, I love you with all my heart!
