IMO Cigar Review: La Gloria Cubana Serie R No. 6 Maduro

I have always been a fan of the La Gloria Cubana Wavells. You will usually find a mix of these and the Baccarat Luchadores in the bottom tray of my humidor. So I was familiar with the quality of the La Gloria Cubana cigar line. I was hoping that the Serie R line would provide a delightful smoke to add to my experiences as well.

I would like to set this smoke session up in the sense that it was an unusual one. I tend to smoke at least 3 - 4 sticks before I write a review on them and my routine is usually done on my back patio. This was my 3rd smoke of the La Gloria Cubana Serie R No. 6 Maduro and I had decided to light it up while out at my parents home. A small notepad and pen accompanied me outside to record the review.

The wrapper was smooth and dark brown, but not uniform in color, closer examination revealed a slightly striped appearance. The stick had a rich tobacco scent.

My large punch freed this stick for the torch and I walked down to the bridge. The La Gloria Cubana Serie R No. 6 Maduro was easy to light and balanced nicely in my hand. It is 5 7/8″ long with a size 60 ring gauge. As I walked back, a quick glance over my shoulder, divulged a heavy smoke cloud. This stick produced a large amount of thick, light gray smoke.

On my walk back I noticed a small figure in the distance headed toward me. Bent slightly forward, a cane supporting a slight limp, the old man made his way to me. As the ground between us closed, I recognized him as a neighbor from my childhood days who lived several blocks away.

I stopped outside the house to finish off the smoke and he came alongside me and we began to chat. We talked about the growth in the area, neighbors long since passed away, pranks pulled, and what the future might hold for the neighborhood.

Sometimes the smoke from the cigar would drift his way and once I apologized for it. He replied “no bother“, the smoke smelled nice and light. As I smoked and we talked I would turn to jot down what flavors I experienced from the La Gloria Cubana Serie R No. 6 Maduro, he never once asked what I was doing, probably a generational thing or he really didn’t care. The conversation slowed, and that awkward moment came when we realized we had nothing else to say. We said our goodbyes, shook hands and I watched him totter toward home.

The ash was unevenly colored with black and light gray stripes through a dark gray base. It was compact, not flakey and held well to the cigar.

The La Gloria Cubana Serie R No. 6 Maduro was very smooth, it had a creamy base with a mild earthy element. I was surprised that the maduro wrapped cigar didn’t develop into a more full bodied smoke. However that isn’t to say it was not a great smoke, just that I was surprised.

It took about an hour for me to finish this cigar, mixed with good conversation, thank you Mr. Perez. It turned out to be the perfect cigar for this occasion.

One of the first lessons you learn as a cigar smoker is don’t judge the cigar by the wrapper. I find the Diablo Picante a very dark maduro fairly mild, then you have a La Flor Domincana Double Liergo Natural which require a full steak dinner to be eaten prior to smoking it. Great review though. I myself have just ventured into the LGC line of cigars.

Yes they are real. I’m 45 years old, 4 kids, 1 ex-wife, 1 girlfriend, so yes they are real, I have plenty of material to choose from. ;-) Thank you for the compliment.
